In November with the YA reading group on Goodreads we are dealing the contemporary genre; I’ve already started (with “The Unbearable Book Club for Unsinkable Girls“) and now with “45 Pounds”, this about weight issues and alimentation.
Ann has weight issues: she is out of shape and can’t find dresses suitable for her size and her body shape.
She tried, during her life, various kind of diets but failing, her aunt marriage (and Ann being one of the bridesmaid) will be the motivation to try again.
This is the main plot in few words, the books is somewhat foreseeable and has a naive ending, however some elements are interesting and dealt well.
First of all once the main character is an imperfect girl, not uber beautiful and with weight problem and complex.
Another element is Ann family, although sometimes quite implausible, focus of the problem: on one hand Ann eats to channel all the frustration perceived at home, on the other the parents behaviour is reflected on their child, especially the little ones, who try to copy what they see at home.
The novel is an easy read and treats the food/obesity theme considering all the things concurring in create it.
