In a magical South Africa whoever commits a crime is animalled: he is forced to create a magical bond with an animal that will always be with him; for this reason a part of the city is called zoo city, only criminals live there.
So the animals provide a status to the linked person, but they also give him some magic to use, different for each couple person-animal.
Zinzi has a sloth and the power to see and recover lost things, a past with his weight in terms of sad memories and debts to pay and has the chance to pay back them by retrieving not an object but a missing girl.
The idea of the animal bond is very interesting, also because of the setting in Africa and the magical feature.
Characters are well depicted as well as the setting in zoo city; the useful info are given to the reader in the form of newspaper articles, quotes from books or police reports.

The second cover is drawn by Joey Hi-FI, who drawn the ones of the Miriam Black series by Chuck Wendig.
