I decided to collect in one post the brief comments about short fiction: there is no relation between these stories a part from being shorter than a novel.
- Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
- The letter by William Somerset Maugham
- Xingu by Edith Warton
Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
A very intense story, based on what it is said but also on what is left for the reader to guess.
The story – thanks to the movie – is well-known; the title does not mean the place where all begun but the place where it will be good to come back, the place where the stronger emotions were left while life kept going on
The letter by William Somerset Maugham
A woman in prison waiting a trial for murder and a letter able to change her luck.
The story is nice, mainly because of its setting in an Asian colony, unfortunately the plot is quite easy to foresee.
Xingu by Edith Warton
When the pretense of knowing is more important than the notion itself it’s the optimal condition to apply Xingu.
This nice story explains how to make a fool of who appear to know everything and do not own the modesty to ask explanations.
Sharp and funny.
