Dash in the bookstore discovers a red Moleskine, inside he finds some hints to obtain a message, at the end he decides to not give back the notebook to Lily, the owner, but to dare her to take it back following other hints.
It starts like this the exchange of messages and dares between the two protagonists by means of the red molkesine. They talk about Christmas – felt differently by the two – and about their hopes and feelings.
Thanks to the exchange of the notebook the reader gets to know their lifestyle: the snarling Dash and his divorced parents and Lily with her numerous, meddler and loving family.
The chapter where Dash speaks are written by Levithan, Lily’s by Cohn, this way of writing allowed the creation of two very different characters, each believable in the his/her context; it’s a pleasing read distant from some genre stereotypes.
