[ARC] Something More Than Night by Ian Tregillis

Being a hard-boiled and Philip Marlowe’s novel fan my interest was drawn by this novel, that unfortunately appears to be far less interesting.

Molly, human and half angel, and Bayliss, a fallen angel, have to investigate about the death of the angel Gabriel, Jericho trumpet keeper, now disappeared.

Bayliss is exactly like Marlowe, so much to have built-in his piece of heaven a setting like the ones that can be fount in the novels by Raymond Chandler.

This way of taking inspiration from the hard-boiled genre works only in part: in this novel there is too much, lots of descriptions, dialogues and situations are almost fanservice and unuseful to the plot.

A second element that to me does not work are the angels: cherubin, seraphim, Pleroma, METATRON (that resembles the transformers) etc.., a lot of imagined things, hard to picture (how magisterium, pleroma and heaven fits) that for the most did not engage me in reading further, maybe I’m not the angel type.

Thanks to the publisher for providing me the copy necessary to write this review.
