The book collects six tales of terror by Joyce Carol Oates, and the first one – that gives the title to the whole book – it’s in my opinion the best one.
Overall the tales are well-built and nice to read, but I think they are quite too long with respect to the mechanism of creepiness building in the reader and to the moment of awareness of the terror element.
In general the stories do not involve supernatural elements, but deal with the daily horror of the society we live in: madness, racism, egoism and envy.
Thanks to the publisher for providing me the copy necessary to write this review.
