This stories collection by different authors – some of them quite famous – is based, as the title itself says, upon the monsters from the Lovecraft’s imaginary.

The book suffers the common issue of the collections: the stories are not all at the same level, so there will be some more or less interesting.
Maybe also the idea to create a book that takes inspiration from Lovecraft does not help: who knows the author could be disappointed from some stories derived from his pantheon of monsters (the same way Neonomicon disappointed me).

The book is however very well finished and well-built: short and longer stories are alternated and separated by some interesting and evocative illustrations.
Overall I liked also the two poems, a new way to talk about monsters and horrors; I liked also the ending part where are listed – with history and characteristics – all the Lovecraft’s monster taken into account in the whole book.

Questa raccolta di racconti di vari autori – alcuni ben noti – è basata, come dice il titolo stesso, sui mostri creati dall’immaginario di Lovecraft.

Il libro soffre il problema comune a tutte le raccolte: non tutti i racconti saranno mai ad uno stesso livello, quindi ci saranno sempre storie che piacciono di più ed altre che deludono.
Forse anche il riprendere Lovecraft non aiuta l’insieme: chi conosce l’autore può rimanere deluso da alcune ispirazioni che ne sono derivate (così come mi ha deluso Neonomicon).

Il volume è comunque molto ben strutturato: racconti più brevi sono alternati ad altri più lunghi ed a separare ogni racconto sono presenti illustrazioni molto evocative.
Nel complesso ho apprezzato molto anche le due poesie contenute nel testo, un mezzo differente dal solito per parlare di orrore. Mi è inoltre piaciuta la parte conclusiva contenente l’elenco di tutti i mostri utilizzati nelle storie, con tanto di spiegazione ed origine.
