Zap! Nikola Tesla Takes Charge is a children book about Nikola Tesla’s life, him being a great scientist we often forgot about.

Tesla is born in Croatia and moves to the United States of America where he finds work under the command of Thomas Edison. Tesla’s skill are great and soon he discovers the alternate current (the one we actually use in our homes), Edison instead believed in continuous current, so he began opposing Tesla’s discovery.

Tesla’s life is both sad and unlucky: Edison’s campaigns against him, his patents used by other people to make further discoveries (like the telephone), his genius unappreciated. The book, being for children, does not point out Tesla’s misfortunes, but focuses on his great ambitions. The illustrations are good and functional to the story, too bad the story itself ends quite abruptly.

The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate (Calpurnia Tate #2) by Jacqueline Kelly

Standard

_______

In the first novel, The evolution of Calpurnia Tate, we met the main character and seen how her love for science born thanks to the help of her grouch but wise grandfather.

This novel begins where the previous one ended, and it allows the reader to spend another year with this wonderful girl, resourceful and in want of an independence almost impossible for the women in her time. The main theme in background this time is the Darwin‘s travel on the Beagle.

Galveston’s hurricane will bring in Calpurnia’s town a new vet and in Calpurnia’s home her cousin; the girl will have to learn how to share her room with this new presence, sometimes quite imposing.

In the novel there are references also to Calpurnia’s brothers, and in particular Trevis and his need to find his own pet animal (possibly a grateful and nice one) and to Calpurnia’s relations with other people and with a world where it’s hard to accept such initiative from a girl.

This novel is, such as the former in the series, a wonderful read, and it’s impossible not to love a main character so incredible as Calpurnia; I’m looking forward for another novel in this series.

[ARC] The Queen’s Shadow: A Story about How Animals See by Cybèle Young

A colorful mantis shrimp

The Queen’s shadow is disappeared during a blackout in a thunderstorm, who is the thief among the animals attending the party?

The mantis shrimp (concerning the awesomeness of this animal I suggest to read this comic from The Oatmeal), the royal detective, has to make light on this mystery: each animal will help by describing what did he see during the blackout.

Each description is paired with an explanation (with text and images) of the way (sight amplitude, lights and shadows, colours) each animal perceive the space around it, and show how the eyesight is functional to the environment and to the need of each species.

It’s a very interesting book, rich in details, maybe not suited for little children who may find the explanation too much complex.
