E’ finalmente uscito Lair of Dreams, secondo capitolo della serie The Diviners di Libba Bray, che, come il primo volume, si distingue per originalità e solida ricostruzione storica degli anni 20.

It’s finally out Lair of Dreams, second book of The Diviners series by Libba Bray, original and with a believable historical reconstruction, as the first book was.
Sono passati alcuni mesi dal caso di John Hobbes, brillantemente risolto grazie ai poteri divinatori di Evie & co.
Adesso, mentre Evie cerca la fama con un programma radiofonico in cui dà mosta dei suoi poteri di lettura degli oggetti, una misteriosa malattia ha colpito la zona di Chinatown, in cui alcune persone si addormentano per non svegliarsi più.
Per risolvere questo problema di sogni che si mutano in incubi infiniti sarà nuovamente necessario l’intervento del gruppo dei Diviners, mentre qualcosa di malvagio sembra avvicinarsi sempre più alla città.
Veri protagonisti del romanzo sono Henry e Ling, capaci di viaggiare in modo cosciente all’interno dei sogni; purtroppo il romanzo tende a dilungarsi un po’ troppo nella descrizione della loro storia e nella ricerca di Louis, il ragazzo di cui Henry è innamorato e che non ha più avuto modo di incontrare dopo essere fuggito dalla casa dei genitori a New Orleans.
Queste storie prendono spazio anche a scapito degli altri personaggi, relegati a ruolo di figure minori nonostante alcune evoluzioni interessanti delle loro storie, Sam in particolare è al centro di una linea narrativa avvincente ma meno approfondita, inoltre ne risente anche il ritmo del romanzo, piuttosto lento nella parte iniziale e esageratamente concitato nella fase conclusiva.
La ricostruzione storica è sempre ben riuscita, si per ambientazione che per scelte linguistiche, personalmente apprezzo molto che l’epoca emerga anche da modi di dire e dialoghi. Interessante è anche lo spunto di analisi sociale, la paura del diverso che viene colpevolizzato della malattia – in questo caso il quartiere cinese – e la reazione dei cittadini, spesso razzista e violenta.
Nel complesso Lair of Dreams è un buon romanzo, avvincente e ben scritto nonostante alcuni difetti, aspetto con impazienza il seguito, protagonista Theta?
Nota. Un peccato che per questa edizione sia stato scelto di orientarsi su una copertina banalotta in cui salvo solo il carattere del titolo, e sì che la serie era partita bene con una copertina originale, capace di emergere per originalità.

It’s been some months from the John Hobbes case, brilliantly solved by the divining powers of Evie & co.
Now, while Evie struggle for fame in a radio show by displaying her skill to read the object past, a mysterious illness has spread in the Chinatown area, where some people sleep without waking up anymore.
The Diviners help will be needed to solve this issue of dreams that become infinite nightmares, while something evil is slowly approaching the city.
The true main characters of this novel are Henry and Ling, able to travel in dreams; unfortunately the novel focuses too much on their stories and in the search of Louis, the guy Henry is in love with and who did not meet again after leaving his parents and New Orleans.
Their stories take space also at loss of the other characters, relegate as minor figures despite some interesting twist in their stories, in particular Sam has an interesting narrative line, that is not very developed. Moreover the novel rhythm suffers, since it is quite slow-paced in the beginning and too fast in the conclusion.
The historical reconstruction is very well done, both for setting and for linguistic choices, personally I like when the epoch emerges also from dialogues and way of saying. It is also interesting the social aspect from the fear of the different, accused of spreading the illness and then treated with racism and violence.
Overall Lair of Dreams is a good novel, engaging and well written despite some minor flaws. I expect the following book, maybe the main character will be Theta?
A note. Too bad that for this edition the choice fell on an anonymous cover, of which I only save the typographic choice: the first book had an original and well suited cover, it could have been good to keep on with that style.
