Down Among the Sticks and Bones ci racconta una parte della storia antecedente a Every Heart a Doorway, in particolare cosa è accaduta alle gemelle Jack e Jill prima di approdare alla casa per bambini ribelli di Eleanor West.

Jacqueline era stata plasmata a immagine della figlia perfetta dalla madre: quindi mai sporcare i bei vestiti, essere sempre in ordine e giocare pochissimo e compostamente.
Jillian al contrario l’aveva plasmata il padre: doveva essere avventurosa e sportiva e poteva giocare con gli altri bambini senza paura di sporcarsi.

Peccato che Jacqueline e Jillian fossero particolarmente infelici di questa plasmatura, e quindi l’apertura della porta che le ha portate in un mondo magico (ma anche horror) è stata una meravigliosa opportunità per un’avventura.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones è un breve romanzo, scorrevole e coinvolgente, godibile anche da chi non ha letto Every Heart a Doorway. Per chi invece ha avuto il piacere di conoscere gli abitanti della casa gestita da Eleanor West ritroverà qui un mix di magia e orrore, una deliziosa fiaba dark.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones tells a part of what happened before Every Heart a Doorway, in particular the story of the twin sisters Jack and Jill before them living in the Eleanor West’s house for Wayward Children.

Jacqueline was educated as her mother’s perfect girl: be a little princess, do not get dirty and don’t be noisy.
Jillian, on the opposite, was educated as her father’s son he did not get: a bit of a tomboy, able to play with other boys, never mind the dirt and the noise.

Too bad that both Jacqueline and Jillian were unhappy about this arrangement, so the door that opened them a magic – and a bit horrific – world was the perfect opportunity for an adventure.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones is a short and compelling novel, that works also as a standalone. The readers who already met the children living in Eleanor West’s house will find here again a mix of magic and horror, an unsettling atmosphere, a delicious dark tale.

Prendiluna by Stefano Benni

Nuovo romanzo di Stefano Benni, racconta la storia di Prendiluna, anziana insegnante del liceo, a cui un gatto ormai morto assegna una missione da cui dipende la sorte dell’umanità: consegnare i suoi Dieci Mici a Dieci Giusti, e poi morire.

Alle vicende di Prendiluna si intrecciano quelle di Dolcino e Michele, suoi ex studenti, ora pazzi e ricoverati in una struttura, da cui prontamente evadono per aiutare la donna.

A queste due linee narrative principali si innesta un turbinio di personaggi, e quella critica sociale basata sull’irriverenza e sul sarcasmo, ben nota agli appassionati dei romanzi di Stefano Benni.

Prendiluna mi ha riportato un po’ agli indimenticabili Elianto e La compagnia dei celestini, anche se ho trovato qui una narrazione più confusa (e non mi riferisco all’incrocio di sogni, trisogni e sogni matrioska).

This book is so extremely weird that I don’t know how to begin talking about it.

The beginning it’s truly intriguing: one morning, the inhabitants of four trailers, installed in a camping for the summer, wake up and do not find anymore the camping. Around them a field of green grass and an infinite blue sky.

This way start a story that can be defined as horror, but also in the extreme weird. The main characters (Trailer 1: Athletic Peter, his beautiful wife Isabel and Molly, their daughter, Trailer 2: Quiet Stefan with Carina and their son Emil, Trailer 3: The strange couple Olof and Lennart and their cat and last Trailer 4: Quick tempered Donald and his patient wife Majvor and their dog) initially try to understand this new environment and to find clues on how to get back to their quiet, boring reality.

After some time this anonymous place starts to bring out the worst from them: visions bring back the hidden past and the worst and violent inclination of these unlucky campers. The characters are the focus of the novel and they are well-build, also thanks to the narrative choice to follow each PoV, with a couple of creepy exceptions.

Unfortunately the conclusion is the apex of the unintelligible, and this is the main reason why the novel did not convince me. In the end a good execution but the ending left me a bit frustrated, too bad since I very much liked Let the right ones in.

Questo libro è talmente strano che non so bene da dove cominciare.

L’inizio è intrigante: una mattina, gli abitanti di quattro roulotte, installate in un campeggio per l’estate, si svegliano e non trovano più il campeggio. Intorno a loro una landa verde quasi irreale e uno sconfinato cielo azzurro.

Inizia così una storia che sfocia in parte nell’horror, ma principalmente nel weird più estremo. I protagonisti (Roulotte 1: L’atletico Peter e la bellissima Isabel con la figlia Molly, Roulotte 2: Il mite Stefan con Carina e figio Emil, Roulotte 3: La strana coppia Olof e Lennart con gatto e Roulotte 4: l’irascibile Donald con la paziente moglie Majvor e il loro cane) cercano inizialmente di orientarsi in questo nuovo ambiente e di trovare indizi che li porteranno nuovamente nella sana, tranquilla realtà.

Con il passare del tempo il luogo anonimo però tira fuori il peggio da ognuno di loro: allucinazioni riportano a galla passati nascosti e le peggiori e violente inclinazioni di alcuni degli sventurati campeggiatori. I personaggi sono il fuoco del romanzo e sono ben caratterizzati, anche perchè la scelta narrativa è di seguire il punto di vista di ognuno di loro, con un paio di dovute e inquietati eccezioni.

La conclusione è l’apoteosi dell’incomprensibile, ed è anche per questo che il romanzo non mi ha convinta più di tanto, insomma buona l’esecuzione ma il finale mi ha lasciato più stranita del previsto, peccato, perchè invece avevo particolarmente apprezzato Lasciami entrare.

La storia inizia con un trasloco: la madre di Marion ha ereditato la casa di famiglia in un paesino di mare, e decide di stabilirsi lì con la figlia.

Marion è una bambina attenta e curiosa, e, dopo aver esplorato il paese e la costa vicino alla casa, si accorge di strane incisioni sulla roccia. A questo si aggiunge lo stano e burbero anziano che sembra vivere nel faro in mezzo al mare, accessibile a piedi solo con la bassa marea.

Indagando un po’ Marion trova indizi di leggende passate e collegamenti con i familiari che vivevano nel villaggio anni prima. Le leggende però sembrano farsi sempre più concrete, e una minaccia inizia a incombere sul paese.

La memoria dell’acqua è una storia gradevole ma sicuramente non eccezionale, tra colpi di scena abbastanza intuibili ed eventi poco probabili nella vita reale (Marion che viene lasciata libera di esplorare – e di rischiare la vita – in diverse occasioni). La parte grafica è molto ben realizzata, e contribuisce a dare ritmo alla narrazione.

The story begins with a relocation: Marion’s mother inherited the family home in a fishermen’s village, and decides to move there with her daughter.

Marion is a clever and curios girl, after exploring the village and the coast near home, she discovers strange incisions on the rocks. There is also the strange and grouch old fisherman living in the lighthouse on a small island reachable by foot only during low tide.

After some time, Marion find hints of old legends and connections with her family living in the village. The legend seems to get more and more real, and to menace the serenity of the village.

Water Memory is a nice book, but not an exceptional one, with foreseeable developments and unlikely behaviours in real life (Marion is free to explore – and to risk her life – in more than one occasion). The graphical part is well-developed, and helps in providing rhythm to the narration.

Rotherweird is a strange town: it’s in England but it is completely independent administratively, it’s almost inaccessible and it’s forbidden to study history before 1800.

Two external however come into the town: Jonah Oblong, who has to teach modern history to the local school, and Sir Veronal Slickstone, who was allowed to renew the old Manor House.

It’s evident that Sir Veronal has other evil plans, and for this reason some of the town’s inhabitants will have to share old secrets and to discover the old and forbidden history of Rotherweird.

The novel alternates the present events to ones from the past (1500 ca.) that clarify why the town was born and the reason why it is forbidden to study history.

In my opinion the book is engaging from the half, in the beginning I found difficult to sort plot and characters (they have strange names that I found easy to confuse).

Rotherweird è una strana città: è in Inghilterra ma è completamente indipendente a livello amministrativo, è quasi inaccessibile ed è vietato indagare la storia antecedente al 1800.

Due estranei però vi si trasferiscono: Jonah Oblong, che insegnerà storia moderna alla scuola locale, e Sir Veronal Slickstone che ha avuto il permesso di ristrutturare l’ormai da tempo abbandonato maniero.

Che Sir Veronal abbia secondi fini risulta chiaro fin da subito, e per questo diversi abitanti si troveranno a condividere antichi segreti e a riscoprire la storia proibita di Rotherweird.

Il romanzo alterna gli eventi presenti a episodi del passato della città (1500 ca.) in cui viene chiarito come è nata e perchè lo studio della storia è proibito.

Ho trovato il romanzo avvincente da circa metà in avanti, nella prima parte ho faticato a ricostruire storia e personaggi (tutti con nomi molto particolari che tendenvo a confondere).

Thunderbird (Miriam Black #4) by Chuck Wendig

Thunderbird è il tanto atteso quarto volume che chiude la serie con protagonista Miriam Black (qui i riferimenti ai libri precedenti), colei che toccandoti sa come e quando morirai.

Miriam è alla ricerca di un metodo per sbarazzarsi del suo potere con cui non si è mai trovata a suo agio, e sembra aver trovato i riferimenti di una donna che potrà aiutarla: Mary Scissors.

Trovarla non è però così semplice, e nel corso del viaggio Miriam si trova suo malgrado invischiata nelle azioni di un gruppo di terroristi dotate di poteri che ambiscono a cambiare il mondo, senza lesinare sulla violenza.

Miriam si troverà ad affrontare un grande dilemma: questa tempesta che sta arrivando è affare suo o no? Accompagnata dalle visioni e dalla scoperta di nuove capacità, Miriam prenderà  la decisione migliore con il suo stile inconfondibile.

Romanzo assolutamente avvincente, soprattutto nella seconda parte in cui facevo fatica a mettere giù il libro, con un finale indimenticabile, è una tappa obbligatoria per i lettori affezionati a Miriam Black.

Mi manchi già, Miriam.
