Elantris was a marvelous city, built on magic, where only people changed in semi-gods were allowed to live.

One day everything changed without a reason: mens are turned in monstrous creatures and Elantris begins to fall apart. Its inhabitants, before so strange and beautiful, now are looked at with horror and they are confined within the city of Elantris.

Around Elantris the world keeps going on, and the power of  Fjordell is becoming a menace to the neighbouring countries.

The novel is build on three points of view: prince Raoden, changed in an Elantrian and secretly exiled to Elantris, who struggles to make alive again the dying city, his betrothal Sarene who, after coming to Arelon for the marriage and discovering her husband to be death, choses to stay in the city to help some nobles in their rebellion and Hrathen,a Fjordell priest, come to the city to convert its inhabitants and annex Arelon reign to Fjordell.

The narration is quite nice and engaging, some chapters about Hrathen are more slow than the others, especially in the beginning.

Elantris is the first novel by Brandon Sanderson and it’s easy to see some elements that will be better structured in Mistborn (the magic, the court politics). Some events are too much plot driven or the outcome of fortuitous chances.

Overall it’s a good fantasy novel, but if I am to suggest a book of this author I will undoubtely suggest to read the initial Misborn trilogy.

Elantris era una città meravigliosa, retta dalla magia, in cui potevano accedere solo gli uomini mutati in creature dalle sembianze divine, capaci di grandi imprese.

Un giorno però il destino di Elantris cambia senza un motivo apparente: gli uomini vengono mutati in creature mostruose e la città inizia a cadere in rovina. Gli abitanti, prima strani e bellissimi, ora sono guardati con orrore e confinati all’interno delle mura di Elantris.

Intorno a Elantris il mondo va avanti, e avanza minacciosa l’ombra del regno di Fjordell sulle terre vicine.

Il romanzo vede alternarsi tre punti di vista: il principe Raoden, mutato e esiliato segretamente in Elantris, che cerca di ricavare il meglio da una città morente, la sua promessa sposa Sarene che, arrivata in Arelon per il matrimonio e scoperta la morte del promesso sposo, sceglie di restare nella città e aiutare un gruppo di nobili alla ribellione e Hrathen, un prete di Fjordell, arrivato in città per convertire gli abitanti e conquistare il regno di Arelon

La narrazione alterna le tre voci creando una struttura gradevole e abbastanza avvincente – alcuni interventi, in particolare di Hrathen risultano un po’ più lenti, soprattutto nella parte iniziale.

Elantris è il romanzo di esordio di Brandon Sanderson e si iniziano a intravedere alcuni elementi che saranno poi meglio strutturati in Mistborn (la magia, gli affari di corte). Alcuni eventi risultano troppo funzionali alla trama o frutto di coincidenze molto fortunate.

Nel complesso è un fantasy gradevole, ma dovendo consigliare un romanzo dell’autore non posso che favorire la trilogia iniziale di Misborn.
