The Piper’s Son by Melina Marchetta

La famiglia di Tom Mackee si è disgregata: dopo la morte dello zio in un attentato su un treno londinese, il padre si è rifugiato nell’alcolismo, allontanando da sè moglie e figlia e abbandonando a sua volta Tom. L’altra sorella del padre, Georgie, deve ancora accettare la gravidanza dovuta al rapporto indefinito con l’ex compagno.

Tom da parte sua ha affrontato la situazione abbandonando la scuola e rifugiandosi nelle droghe, allontanando gli amici storici.

The Piper’s Son racconta quello che succede dopo: il ricomporre i cocci, l’affrontare le paure e il ricostruire una famiglia che sembrava persa così come le amicizie di un tempo. Il romanzo alterna i punti di vista di Tom e Georgie e risulta in una storia emozionante in cui la caratterizzazione dei personaggi e la loro evoluzione è ottimamente resa.

Mi è piaciuto molto e l’ho trovato molto ben scritto, l’unica difficoltà è, nella prima parte, capire relazioni tra i personaggi e ricostruire alcuni avvenimenti passati essenziali alla storia.

Tom Mackee‘s family is broken: after his uncle died in an explosion on a London train, Tom’s father found comfort in booze, pushing away his wife and his daughter, and soon he abandoned Tom. The other sister of his father, Georgie, has instead to elaborate his brother’s death and her pregnancy due to her undefined relation with her ex.

On his side, Tom has faced the whole situation leaving school and making himself lost in drugs, and leaving behind his old friends.

The Piper’s Son tells what happens later: putting together everything, facing fears and reconstructing a family that seemed lost, as well as old friendships. The novel is told by the POV of Tom and Georgie, and is an emotional story where characters and their evolution is wonderfully described.

I liked reading it and I think it’s beautifully written, the only difficulty is, in the first part, understanding the relations between characters and reconstructing past events that are crucial to the story.

Il romanzo è ambientato in un imprecisato futuro in cui la società è al collasso e i governi mantengono il controllo solo tramite fugaci azioni di forza. Le città si svuotano, e i cittadini si spostano alla ricerca di qualcosa di meglio; il punto di vista del romanzo è quello di una donna, non più giovane, che abita in una palazzina di una delle città che si stanno svuotando.

La vita della donna si divide tra il cercare provviste, reperire informazioni e osservare quello che la circonda, almeno finchè non le viene affidata una ragazzina, Emily e il suo gatto Hugo. La donna descrive così anche il rapporto con la ragazza, sempre educata ma scostante, e le interazioni di Emily con il mondo esterno e con le bande di ragazzi e bambini che si stanno formando.

Abbiamo sotto gli occhi la civiltà che si sta disgregando, oltre a scorci del passato che appaiono come sogni alla protagonista.

Memorie di una sopravvissuta è un libro strano, lento ma capace di coinvolgere, nonostante le minuziose descrizioni di particolari ininfluenti. Può essere letto a più livelli, dato che molti elementi rimandano a temi classici dell’immaginario della scrittrice.

La postfazione è stata interessante: il romanzo si può collocare nel periodo in cui diversi scrittori riflettevano sul collasso della società (Ballard con Il Condominio, Burgess con Arancia Meccanica,..).

The novel is set in an undefined future where the society is collapsing and the governments try to maintain their power by means of sporadic acts of force. People are escaping towns, in search of something better; the point of view of the novel is a woman, who lives in an apartment building in an undefined town.

The woman spends her time by looking for provisions, getting information and observing what’s happening around her, at least till a young girl is entrusted in her care. The girl is Emily, and she is carrying with her Hugo, her cat. The woman begins describing her relation with the girl, so well-mannered but distant, and Emily’s interactions with the changing external world, and with the new-born gangs of children.

We have under our eyes the implosion of society, and hints of the past that come to the narrator as dreams.

The memoirs of a survivor is a strange book, able to engage despite the pointless detailed descriptions; there are different reading levels, since most elements points to recurring themes in the writer imagery.
