E’ finalmente uscito Lair of Dreams, secondo capitolo della serie The Diviners di Libba Bray, che, come il primo volume, si distingue per originalità e solida ricostruzione storica degli anni 20.

It’s finally out Lair of Dreams, second book of The Diviners series by Libba Bray, original and with a believable historical reconstruction, as the first book was.
Veramente un bel romanzo; l’ambientazione nell’America degli anni ’20 è decisamente ben resa, le descrizioni sono vivide e ben dettagliate.
Buona anche la caratterizzazione dei personaggi, tutti con vari segreti più o meno manifesti nel romanzo; la protagonista, Evie, è un’eroina spesso capricciosa ma allo stesso tempo spigliata e ironica che non ha bisogno di alcun principe che la porti in salvo.
La trama è basata sul tema dell’occulto e del paranormale e i capitoli dedicati a queste tematiche sono angoscianti al punto giusto.
Complessivamente un buon romanzo, peccato solo che molti personaggi siano utili ai fini della serie e non del singolo romanzo, in quest’ottica il titolo originale, “The diviners” (titolo decisamente poco azzeccato), funge più da introduzione a maggiori mali che verranno; quello italiano se possibile è ancora peggiore.

I enjoied this novel, the setting in the New York of the ’20 is really good, the descriptions are vivid and rich in details.
The characterisation is also well done; each character has his load of secret (more or less disclosed within the novel); the main character, Evie, a fickle seventeen year old girl, is easy going and ironic, an heroine who does not need any prince to save her.
The plot is based on the themes of the occult and paranormal and the chapters dedicated to these themes give quite the creeps.
Overall it is a good novel, the only issue is that some characters are only useful in view of the series and not of this single novel, so “The diviners” (a poorly chosen title) is more an introduction to greater evil yet to come.

The beauty queens plane crashes on an apparently desert island: the girls will have to save themselves in the end (without princes).
Beauty Queens is a funny novel parodying – by taking them to the extreme – some typical behaviors of beauty queens; during their stay in the island the girls will be forced to be their true self and they will start sharing ideas and dreams – and that pageants are not so amazing.
The novel deals with various themes without losing its irony.
The first part is the best one: the ideas of the Fun facts and the use of different point of view for each chapter are good and it also deals with the changing of the beauty queens toward normal girls.
The last part, more rich in action scenes, is not as good as the first one; many characters are too much a parody to be taken seriously.
I liked also the commercial breaks; concerning the footnotes they are likeable but quite too much (and a pain on a digital edition).

Un aereo carico di reginette di bellezza si schianta su un’isola – apparentemente – deserta: toccherà alle ragazze il compito di salvarsi (senza l’aiuto di principi azzurri).
Beauty Queens è un romanzo divertente che parodizza, portandoli agli estremi, i comportamenti tipici delle reginette; durante la permanenza sull’isola però il carattere delle ragazze emerge e le beauty queens iniziano a condividere idee e sogni – e un certo malcontento verso i concorsi di bellezza.
Il romanzo riesce a trattare tematiche più profonde senza perdere di ironia.
La parte iniziale è sicuramente quella meglio riuscita, sia per l’idea di inserire i Fun facts e utilizzare il punto di vista di una ragazza diversa ogni capitolo, sia per la presa di consapevolezza delle reginette che iniziano a cambiare atteggiamento.
L’ultima parte, più ricca di azione, è forse troppo concitata e con personaggi troppo parodistici per risultare credibili.
Le interruzioni pubblicitarie sono un’altra buona idea, le note a pie di pagina sono un’idea interessante ma sono un po’ troppe (e molto difficili da seguire in una edizione digitale).
